Birth Assistant

 

Position Overview

The Birth Assistant plays a vital role in assisting midwives, birthing families, and the clinical team throughout the labor and birth process. This position involves clinical support, emotional and physical assistance to laboring clients, and ensuring the birthing environment is safe, clean, and prepared.

 

Essential Functions 

  • Assist midwives during labor, birth, and immediate postpartum care
  • Monitor and record maternal and fetal vitals under supervision
  • Provide emotional and hands on support to birthing persons (comfort measures, positioning, etc.) and their families
  • Prepare birth suites and ensure all necessary supplies and equipment are ready
  • Maintain accurate documentation during births and charting support
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed, if certified
  • Provide newborn support under midwife supervision (vitals, documentation, etc.)
  • Provide patient education, as directed midwife
  • Familiar with midwifery model of care 
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment
  • Assist with postpartum cleanup and laundry, including sterilizing instruments and restocking supplies
  • Support emergency response protocols as directed by clinical staff
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and continuing education

Qualifications

  • Active Licensed Midwife or RN licensed in the State of South Carolina (or ability to obtain in SC) 
  • Obstetrics experience preferred
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) required or obtained upon hire
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic clinical setting
  • Ability to work an on-call schedule in 24-hour shifts

 

Compensation and Benefits

This is a contract position paying $500 per birth assisted.
